What A Homeschool Room Really Needs

My heart has been wrestling.
It started the week before the inner city mission trip. I spent the week rearranging my homeschool room. We moved bookshelves, used some scrap wood to make shelves, added a $20 light. For years now I've enjoyed taking time in the summer to make the space fresh for the upcoming year. I excitedly shared photos.
Even as I prepared, I noted how big our school room now feels. Where there was once six of us doing school daily, there will be only three this year. Though the size is the same, each child leaving home makes the entire house feel bigger.
Time With Each Child

Years ago I read a biography on Susannah Wesley. I was raised Methodist, so I was familiar with the legacy of her sons, Charles and John. I knew they had been reared in a large family. In desperation as to how their mother did it, I read about Susannah, hoping to glean some parenting wisdom.
Susannah is a great example of mothering through adversity. She birthed 19 children losing many in infancy. She had a "failed marriage" by today's standards. In fact, her husband left her for a period of time and she was a single mom. I found her most profound insights on parenting was learned during this time - she regularly dedicated a portion of time to interact with each child individually.

I am working with a seventh grade boy and his mom this summer to make their summer academically meaningful. I really admire this mom. She works full time as a night nurse, and stays is extremely involved in her son's education. She needed a "right hand" so to speak to not only meet with her son a few times, but to also help her understand emails from his teacher and learn some better techniques in assisting her son.

became a desk in our family room.
Sugar Cookie Ice Cream Bowls

One of my goals over Memorial Day weekend was to make menus for the next two weeks and get the grocery shopping accomplished. With the chaos of finishing my college classes and out of town company at the house for celebrations, it felt great to plan for some normal days. I love party days, but I also like normal days, and making normal days feel like a party.
I've seen posts on Pinterest for chocolate ice cream bowls.

Those chocolate bowls gave me an idea. I decided to try making cookie bowls this weekend.
