Packing Burn Ointment

He was standing in the driveway Sunday afternoon, ready to leave. I was running back and forth to the house, grabbing last minute things to add to his duffel.
Burn ointment. I had just used it myself last week, my burn not yet healed completely. I brought it outside and placed it in his hand.
"If you burn yourself, use this," I said, choking back tears.
He was certain to burn himself sometime this next month. He placed it in the door pocket of his truck. I added a box of band aids I was still holding.
Happy Spring!

Happy first day of spring! When the children were little, we decided to do all the cute bunny - spring stuff on the first day of spring rather than Easter Sunday. We keep Easter focused on the resurrection of our Savior by moving all "fluff" to a different day.
Sitting on the Edge

We gather four times around the table today. Waiting until everyone is there. Waiting to give thanks for our food. It all takes hours. The preparing, the serving, the waiting. Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner. Dessert - which happens hours later when a pie comes out of the oven. This eating stuff has taken my day.
I am tired.
I sit on the fireplace edge, not committing to conversation with the men at the table. Three generations laugh, joke, talk. First basketball, trucks, and then the welding project happening in the garage. I wait. My coffee is too hot. The house is hot after baking the pie.
Tough Times = Homemade Laundry Soap

I could never be a homesteader. I like shopping malls and restaurants too much. So for a long time, I resisted doing something as pioneer-ish as making my own cleaning agents. It seemed too..... well homesteader and pioneer-ish for lack of any more adjectives. And besides, I really love Tide, and really love my routine.
But my husband's construction occupation is still in recession mode.
I've started making our laundry soap. There are thousands of recipes online. A quick Google search will even turn up how-to videos.
Super Summer Challenge

A few summers ago, I created the "Super Summer Challenge" for my children. Josiah, our 12 year-old, mentioned it one afternoon last week while we were walking. He asked that I create a similar system for him this coming summer. I love it when my children remember of something that worked well in the past and ask for a repeat!
What exactly is a super summer challenge? It is a list of activities customized for each child that helps them fill their long summer days AND develop new skills and habits.
