Narrative Writing
Narrative writing at the adolescent level can still be based on real or imagined experiences and events. However the complexity of the writing should gradually increase.
Students should demonstrate establishing a problem, developing one or multiple points of view and develop “a sequence of events so that they build on one another to create a coherent whole,” states the Common Core State Standards. This should be done using dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection. Advanced adolescent writers should strive to develop multiple plot lines.
Students should be familiar with plot development and use of transition words between paragraphs and within paragraphs. They should develop skills in using sensory details and create vivid pictures of scenes, characters, and settings.
