Improving Student Writing
The Alliance for Excellent Education, funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, released Writing Next: Effective Strategies to Improve Writing of Adolescents in Middle and High Schools in 2007.
Authors, Dr. Steve Graham and Dr. Dolores Perin evaluated hundreds of studies on student writing and compiled a meta-analysis.
A meta-analysis takes into consideration both the strength and consistency of the specific writing practice being studied. A meta-analysis considers a much broader understanding of the research available, and attempts to rate studies against one another, determining what teaching practices show the highest student improvement.
This information is immensely important to the parent working with their child, but with limited time to sort through studies personally.
Writing Next indentified a number of practices used in writing instruction that improved student writing. Detailed information and suggestions on how to include some of these practices in your writing instruction can be found at the links to the left.
