It's Monday? Write Again! #5

If you are keeping a writer's notebook, consider taking this week to record the small details you notice around you.
One way to encourage this practice is take writing class outdoors. Find a quiet place to sit. Observe the world around you for a few minutes. List what you see.
- The ant crawling across a rock.
- The leaf floating from tree to ground.
- The smell of a fire drifting from the neighbor's brick chimney like a nomad in the wilderness.
- The last flower of summer standing soldierly amidst the dried twigs.
Writers use their five senses and vivid words to describe things. Try using active verbs, similes, and metaphors. Don't worry about writing paragraphs. Focus on getting a couple really good sentences down about the small details in your backyard.
Writing small requires time. A writer has to invest time to really see the world. And then thinking time to transfer the observations into words.
Take a few minutes each day this week to write small with your children.
