Are you trying to use a writer's notebook in your homeschool this year?
Participants in the Write Next to Me© Writing Community spent last week drawing maps of a special place from their past. One child drew the shoreline of a favorite vacation spot and another child drew the house where he currently lives. Many of the parents drew maps of the neighborhood they explored as a child. We then used our maps to trigger stories. There was lots of excitement when parents and children partnered up and shared their maps and stories. I overhead kids say, "I like writing like this!" WOW! Kids saying they like writing? It thrills me!
Interested in the writing prompts we used after drawing our maps? Here you go!
- Write a paragraph describing your favorite place on your map.
- Write a paragraph telling a story that occurred somewhere on your map.
- Write a paragraph describing a person who was a part of your special place.
At the writing community parents meeting, parents discussed teaching how to write paragraphs and holistic vs. analytic scoring rubric. One parent said, "This weekly meeting on writing is really keeping me accountable to write more in our homeschool." WOW again!
Here's a couple links to use if you're helping a writer understand the essential parts of a paragraph:
Have a great week and be sure to keep writing with your students!
